Kennebec River Rail Trail 5K {Race Recap}

This past Sunday I ran my first 5K of the year. I wasn't necessarily expecting to run fast. I haven't done any sort of structured speed work in 8 months or so and running so much less, though mileage is now increasing as marathon training is underway. Anyway, like the Sugarloaf 15K, this meant I felt no pressure. I like doing this race since the girls and I used to run on the rail trail all the time (and hopefully will again soon...miss them) and my dad is on the Board of Directors for the trail, so it is something I like to support.

I got up early to make the trek to Augusta to pick up my bib. As soon as I parked and got out of the car the sky opened up and it poured. Fabulous. 

I got my bib and shirt (happy that they were a pretty blue this year compared to the ugly brown they gave out last year) and sat down inside to wait for the start. 

2013 and 2012

I saw Louise and we chatted for a bit and I drooled over her new Mizuno Wave Sayonaras. 

We waited undercover (thankfully) as the half marathon started 15 minutes before the 5K. I did the half last year and it was so hot. Since I'm just upping my mileage and hadn't raced a 5K in over a year, I opted for the shorter distance.

With just a couple minutes before the start the rain really started coming down. Like it can't physically rain any harder. The clouds were literally dumping buckets of water on our heads. Then we were off. There was no dodging puddles. I forgot my hat, so I was squinting as water ran into my eyes. I didn't start my Garmin soon enough and was a good 10 seconds into the race before it found the satellite. I did look down and see a sub-7 and in my head I freaked out a little...too fast, too fast! 

Once on the trail and nearly a mile in the rain let up. I was in a groove and was running strong. My Mizuno EVO Cursoris drain water really well and felt great on my feet. I passed a couple of teenagers on the way out and soon the lead male was coming toward me and I started counting the female runners to find out my place. I counted 7 and then hit the turn around! I was in the top 10! 

I didn't think I was going to PR and just had my watch set on pace/distance since I started it late. I passed another kid (male) and another guy and I could see the finish would be coming soon. I was pushing the pace, but not too crazy because my stomach was starting to feel like I was going to throw up. I was feeling really hot and humid as the rain was staring to evaporate off the ground. 

I saw 23:2x on the race clock (my PR is 23:49) and knew it was going to be close. I was done and immediately went to the trash can and fought off dry heaves. That was the first time I ran hard enough that I wanted to throw up. I recovered and nibbled on bagels, cheered on the other runners, and waited for the results to be posted. 

Louise and I took some drowned rat pictures and texted Jen who was working, but had come down to the trail further up to cheer and take pictures of the half marathon runners.

I checked the results and my chip time was 23:47, a 2 second PR! (In later checking the results, my time is recorded as 23:51...oh well.) But I also saw 2/13 by my name and was psyched as they give out awards to the top two in each age group. 

They were just starting the 5K awards as the first half runners came to the finish. It was an exciting as Seth (the winner from last year) and another guy ran neck and neck to the line!

They got to the 30-39 female winners and the race director called my name first! The woman who won the 5K was in my age group, so I was #1! (Cool fact - other than the winner, the other 6 ladies who finished ahead of me are teenagers or in their very early-20s...not shabby for this old lady.)

23:47, 7:40 pace (7:40, 7:33, 7:50, :44)
23 out of 97 overall, 8 out of 53 females, 1 out of 12 in age group 30-39

Overall, this is a great race. It's a smallish field and a fast course and one that I will be doing year after year.

3ThingsThurs: drawing, running, winning

1. I was cleaning up the living room last night after work and came upon this drawing Zeke created.

2. Marathon training run #2 was four miles and was the first time I've run on back-to-back days since Reach the Beach: MA over a year ago. I woke up late (really need to go to bed earlier) and contemplated just going out with the double stroller again, but Ian can go to work late on certain days so I got up and got it done. I'm really trying to focus on negative splits and today it was a success.

What's Up Wednesday

The first day of marathon training, that's what!

It's a beautiful day here, so instead of running first thing I decided to wait and run with the stroller to the elementary school and spend some time at the playground. I might be a little crazy for opting for a double stroller run, but it is sure going to make me strong!

It wasn't all that fast, but the hills here are killer. I'm glad that we stopped halfway to play so I could get a breather!

But not for long because Zeke challenged me to do the monkey bars. I'm happy to report I did the whole thing. 

And even busted out some pull-ups. By some I mean two. The Spartan Race I'm doing this November will be a piece of cake! I can only hope!

Anyway, here's the run in numbers -
3.05 miles in 30:34 (10:01 pace)

Four miles are scheduled for tomorrow. I'm thinking my arms are going to need a rest, so I'll be flying solo while everyone is sleeping.

Weekend Wrapup and More

 We had another nice weekend here. Ian had a relaxing Father's Day, even though I had to work Sunday night and leave him with the boys. The boys and I gave him a charcoal grill and he grilled up some steak tips that had been marinated in balsamic vinaigrette. With sautéed onions, garlic and zucchini for sides, this was the most delicious meal I've had in a long time! You just can't get the same flavors when cooking with the propane grill. Yesterday he fired it up again to have BBQ chicken and grilled spears of zucchini for dinner. Two meals in a row that the boys gobbled up. I love summer cooking.

We planned on running five miles on part of the course for the Bath Heritage Days race on the Fourth of July, but had to wait out a quick moving thunderstorm. It starts downtown, so we had to start and stop a bit in the beginning and end for traffic lights, but overall it was a great run.  Thankfully the rain cooled it down from the high seventies to 66, but the humidity was still high so we were both sweating up a storm. At least the route has some really nice houses with beautiful architecture that made the time go right by. A new personal distance record for Ian and a PDR for me pushing the double stroller. I'm thinking it will be a little easier in a couple weeks when we can run on the roads during the race instead of the sidewalk.

Tomorrow is my first official run in my training plan for MDI - just three miles, but it's a start!

Cheribundi Review

So what do I think? 

I've always loved the tartness of cranberry juice, but never a huge fan of anything cherry flavored. I dare say that Cheribundi has changed my view of cherries. This is one delicious juice! It was also difficult keeping the boys away from it so I could do this review. While I can't say for certain that drinking Cheribundi alone helped me recover faster from running or sleep better at night (I might have needed a longer trial period), I would definitely recommend Cheribundi as a delicious way to get more fruits in your diet.

Week in Review

Let's see what happened this week?

It was beautiful here Monday. Ian went for a run and did a full three miles. I then went out for a few miles that ended up being 5.4. It was so hot. Really only 68 degrees, but it was my first run of the year with the temperature over 50. So even though it felt like I was running 8-minute-miles, they were actually around 8:50. Ugh. At least I was keeping the pace pretty consistent - 8:49, 8:48, 8:45, 8:51, 8:49, 3:22 for the last .4. 

Wednesday Zeke's preschool had their treasure hunt day, so I went with Finn and we got to stay for a picnic lunch and for a couple extra hours so Zeke could spend time with his friends.

We headed to the Androscoggin River path afterward for a quick stroller run. I couldn't go without a run on National Running Day! 

Sitting outside on Thursday we found HUGE maple leaves on tiny saplings that are growing among the lilacs. I've never seen one so big!

Friday was Zeke's last day of preschool and I admit I was holding back tears a couple of times. A little because he is going to be in Kindergarten, but also I felt terrible as none of his friends will be going to the same school. 

Ian, Finn and I spent time at Home Depot while Zeke was in school to price out materials for our upstairs bathroom which we will be renovating very shortly. We don't currently use this bathroom, but this is what it looks like.

I've already removed the drop ceiling, torn out the ugly box someone had built around the tub, and removed some lovely brown/beige/gray shag carpet.

We had pick Zeke up a little early to head to his new school for Visitation Day where we were able to speak with the principal and see his classroom and spend some time with his new teacher. She's very sweet and I think Zeke is excited for the next school year.

That's about it. I've got to head to work in a little bit and be at the restaurant all day tomorrow, so I'm hoping the rainy weather we are having clears up. Have a great weekend!
